On the Move: SIGGRAPH 2017 Part One

At the beginning of August, I traveled out to L.A. to attend the SIGGRAPH 2017 conference. This conference concentrates on graphic design and computer animation. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to discuss women in STEM fields.

Like many high tech industries, the graphics and animation fields are still underrepresented by women. I feel like every day there is a new article that comes out that discusses some of this disparity. SIGGRAPH, however, is fighting back against those stereotypes. The conference aims to bring more women into the industry. In fact, SIGGRAPH has a goal of 50% representation split between males and females by 2025.  Continue reading

Network Your Butt Off – June 2017

At the end of every month, I sit down and review my planner, digital calendar (yes I have both…#ladybosses hustle), different webpages, saved emails, and various other places, and plan out the following month when it comes to events and networking. Working for myself, I have found this to be very useful for me to take a few hours to just think through my next month so I have an idea of what weeks might be networking heavy for me, and which ones might be lighter so I can, you know, actually do the work I’m hired to do.Continue reading

4 Simple Ways to Build Your Community

Since I started doing my podcast, the biggest feedback I’ve gotten from listeners is that it is giving them the courage to get out the door, build their communities, and find connections of their own. It really makes me happy to hear that other women are looking for the right group of support to help them succeed.

A supportive community is essential to achieving your goals. While you might be lucky and already have a great support system that understands your goals and can help you achieve them, many of us don’t. We might not have anyone who quite understands our business vision, or our family might not like the activism we’ve chosen to get involved in. If you aren’t receiving the support you need, it is definitely time to find like-minded individuals who can help you.

However, it’s scary to put yourself out there without being sure what you’ll get back in return. Rejection is the main reason many of us sit on the sidelines, afraid to reach out. The first step is always the hardest, of course. Once you start putting in the effort to become part of a community, you’ll find the right support system will start to come together around you.

Here are some simple steps to help get you started:Continue reading

Network Your Butt Off – April 2017

Before we get into the meat of our post, I wanted to point out that today is Equal Pay Day. What is that, you ask? Equal Pay Day is technically a different day each year, and it’s a day to illustrate the gap between what men make in one calendar year and how much more time it will take for women to make the same amount as a man.

Basically, that means as of today, the average woman will finally make the same amount of money for the same work that a man in similar position made in the 2016 calendar year. Yup, that’s right ladies, we have to work basically Q1 (quarter one) of the following year before we make the equivalent to our male coworker’s salaries from last year. Continue reading
